Lexia Launching Its Inaugural LETRS® Science of Reading Grant
Each of the 120 grant recipients will be awarded access to Lexia’s science of reading-based professional learning
BOSTON –Lexia, part of Cambium Learning Group, today announced the launch of its inaugural Lexia LETRS® Science of Reading Grant Contest for K-5 teachers in the United States. The contest will offer grants to 120 recipients, providing them with no-cost access to the award-winning Lexia LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional learning. The contest’s entry period opens September 12 and continues through October 22, 2023.
Lexia LETRS professional learning is a two-year literacy-focused course that provides teachers with deep knowledge to be language and literacy experts in the science of reading. Developed by Dr. Louisa Moats and leaders in the field of literacy, LETRS is used by educators in 47 states and teaches the skills needed to master the foundational and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written language.
“While teachers are the most essential factor for student success, only about a quarter of teaching institutions effectively prepare them for literacy instruction,” said Lexia President, Nick Gaehde. “Our goal is to seek out and support elementary teachers who are dedicated to transforming literacy teaching in their classroom.”
To enter the grant program, participants must create a short video (60 seconds or less) and share on social media with the hashtag #LexiaLETRSGrant that answers the question: “How will Lexia LETRS® help transform your teaching to impact student learning?” For more information on how to enter, visit Lexia LETRS Grant web page.
A panel of judges will evaluate each entry. Winners will be notified via email around the end of November 2023, and they will have the option of beginning LETRS in February or March of 2024.
Eligibility for the grant program is restricted to educators who do not currently have access to LETRS through existing school, district, or state contracts. Prospective entrants can determine if they are in a state that currently offers Lexia LETRS to educators by visiting Lexia’s state adoptions web page.
“Teaching reading requires a deep understanding of the processes and science behind it,” said Gaehde. “We want every teacher to have access to the information they need to be successful.”
